TURIN It is home to the House of Savoy and the Shroud of Turin. It is the headquarters of Italy’s automobile greats and the location of the 2006 winter Olympics. The wine is superlative, as are the chocolates. Yet Turin is almost miraculously devoid of the throngs of sightseers that bedevil most tourist hubs. However, those aware of the charms of Piedmont’s capital aren’t complaining.

ALBA
Cradled in the hilly area of Langhe is the medieval city of Alba. But it isn’t just its towers and stone houses that beckon tourists. It is here that some of the finest wines, including the revered Barolo, are brewed. Ferrero, that well-loved chocolatier, is based in this city. And its white truffles have been sampled by every self-respecting foodie. |

ASTI
Its medieval edifices vie with those of Alba. Its robiola cheese is as cherished by epicureans as Alba’s truffles. And while the citizens of Alba sip Barolo and Barbaresco; the men of Asti drink Asti Spumante and Barbera d’Asti. Even against its historic rival, Asti holds its own. |
